Crotchet Barn Vegan Holiday Cottage

Crotchet Barn is a self contained spacious barn conversion with a luxurious super-king size bed and comfortable double sofa bed which provide accommodation for up to 4 people.

Crotchet Barn comprises an open plan living, dining and fully equipped kitchen area, with a separate bedroom and shower room. There is also a sun lounge and private garden area which looks out over our budding forest garden, orchard and veg plot- perfect for watching the evening sunset after a busy day exploring.

The kitchen is equipped with electric cooker, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. There are plenty of pans, utensils and crockery to cook with, and not forgetting the sharp knives! Tea, coffee and sugar will be available on arrival, although as we are vegan we will not provide dairy milk. However, if you would like some home made nut or seed milk, please let us know. Spices, oil, salt and pepper are also provided, along with cleaning essentials such as washing up liquid, tea towels, washing cloths, dishwasher tablets, washing powder and surface cleaner- just ask us for more if you run out during your stay as we are keen to reduce waste.

The bedroom has a super king bed, with a comfortable mattress, and a choice of soft or firm pillows. For the colder, winter nights there are hot water bottles and extra blankets. There are blackout curtains, although you may not need them as there are no streetlights- great for star gazing. 

Unlimited Wifi is included. 

The heating is provided by electric convection heaters, and an electric towel rail in the shower room.

Although Crotchet Barn can sleep up to four guests, we regret that it is not suitable for children under twelve years old.

Your key will be in a key-safe allowing a “contactless” check in. You are free to arrive at anytime after check in, which is 1500 onwards.

The Somerset Levels are world renowned for their wildlife, especially wetland birds. RSPB Greylake, Swell Wood and West Sedgemoor are nearby, along with Avalon marshes, Ham Wall and Shapwick Heath Nature Reserves. Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve is the last surviving South West lowland acid mire, and West Sedgemoor is England’s largest remaining wet meadow system. You may get the opportunity to spot Eurasian Cranes, starling murmurations, barn owls and other birds of prey, egrets and migratory swans, to name just a few.

Alternatively, find out more about the traditional skills of willow growing and weaving at the Willow and Wetland Centre in Stoke St Gregory which has a free museum, walks, cafe and artisan shops to browse. The centre also runs willow weaving courses all year round.

Somerset is home to several National Trust properties with nearby sites including the Priest’s House at Mulcheney, Barrington Court at Ilminster, and not forgetting Wellington Monument (the tallest three sided obelisk in the world) and the famous Glastonbury Tor.

Other attractions, all within reasonable driving distance for a day out include the West Somerset Steam Railway, Well’s Cathedral, Bristol Wave Park, Clark’s Village, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge. The beautiful Quantock Hills and Exmoor are also not far.

Closer to home, there are two pubs within walking distance- the Rose and Crown which serves food, and The Royal Oak, which has pool, darts and a skittles alley. There is a village shop which provides daily basic supplies.

Only 8 miles from Junction 25 of the M5, or 11 miles fromTaunton Train Station (mainline). By prior arrangement, we can provide a free transfer from/ to the station. A regular bus service runs from Taunton Bus Station right past the front door (number 51, Hatch Green Coaches).

An extensive network of local footpaths start from our back garden, and many lead to some long distance walks including the River Parrett Trail, the East Deane Way and the Macmillan Way West. 

Routes 3, 339, 30 and 33 of the National Cycle Network are all nearby.

Our central location makes exploring the wider countryside possible, with Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge, the Quantocks and the North or South coasts all within easy driving distance.

Your hosts are Joanna and Andrew. We live on site and are around most of the time. However, Crotchet Barn is detached and has it’s own private entrance, garden and adjacent parking so you will not be disturbed by us, unless you need us. We have been vegan for three years and are proud to be one of the few companies to provide only vegan accommodation- we ask that no animal products are consumed at Crotchet Barn, but of course, everyone is welcome and we look forward to meeting you soon!
